Beneficial Scholars Program Underway For 2006-07

In keeping with its commitment to education, Beneficial Savings Bank is continuing the Beneficial Scholars Program for the 2006-07 academic year.

The initiative will award $5,000 scholarships to 10 college-bound high school seniors. Students in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties in New Jersey are eligible to apply.

Beneficial launched the program in 2003 in honor of its 150th birthday. Since then, it has generated overwhelming response, with more than 600 students from approximately 200 schools participating last year.

Students interested in applying must be seniors during the 2006-07 academic year and submit an essay about the most important issue facing their community and how they would respond to this concern. Entries must be submitted by Dec. 1, 2006. A distinguished judging panel of area community leaders, business owners, educators and politicians -- including Congressman Curt Weldon and representatives from The Philadelphia Education Fund and City of Philadelphia Child Welfare Unit -- will select the top 10 essay winners.
